  1. Very interesting! I wonder if someone could come and copyright it now or is it protected somehow? I might bring might kids down for a pic and post it on my blog. Cheers!

  2. I am a native of Las Vegas and I can remember that sign being there probably as long as I have been alive. I never knew that it was never copy written. Thanks for a new information.

  3. I like the little parking area they created for this popular attraction. Now all the visitors can safely get out of the car for their photo opportunity at the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Really who doesn't have a picture at this landmark?

  4. As long as I've lived in Las Vegas, I have never actually gone and seen the sign itself, surprisingly. Interesting to hear that it isn't copyrighted in any way. You would figure someone would, given the massive popularity of it.

    1. Betty Willis made very little from this work. I believe she should be credited when this image appears. At the time it was created, Betty Willis stated that the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign was her gift to the city of Las Vegas, NV. By not claiming copyright, she allowed her work to enter the public domain. Once there, the design could be copied and reproduced by anyone. If a new original work is created from a public domain piece, then it can be copyrighted. The design has to be altered in some way creating something new and unique. The actual work itself can not be copyrighted since it is in the public domain. The following article talks about re-copyrighting works in the public domain. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090212/1238593748.shtml
